CO2 Calculator for Planted Tanks

Dialing in CO2 is the single highest-leverage adjustment in a high-tech planted tank — and the easiest to get wrong. This calculator gives you a safe starting bubble rate for your tank size, the drop-checker color to aim for, and a daily schedule that keeps your livestock safe.

Your CO2 starting point

Livestock always comes first

CO2 is invisible and odorless — fish cannot escape it. Start at the low end of the range above, raise the rate a little every few days, and watch your livestock: gasping at the surface or lethargy means reduce CO2 immediately and add surface agitation. Never chase a number on a chart past what your fish tolerate.

How the numbers are calculated

  • Starting rate — about 1 bubble per second per 10 gallons (0.4 L of tank per bubble per second, if you prefer metric). This is the long-standing planted-tank rule of thumb for a starting point — not a target. Your diffuser efficiency, surface agitation, and plant mass all shift the real number.
  • The range (±25%) reflects that every tank diffuses CO2 differently. Fine-tune inside it using your drop checker, not the bubble counter.
  • Drop checker: lime green ≈ 30 ppm CO2, read 2–3 hours after a change. Use 4 dKH reference solution in the checker — tank water gives false readings.
  • Timing: CO2 on 1–2 hours before lights (it takes time to saturate the water), off 1 hour before lights-out so levels fall before the night, when plants stop consuming it.
  • Photoperiod 6–8 hours. Longer light with CO2 mostly grows algae faster, not plants.

Methodology sources: the drop-checker method (4 dKH reference solution, ~30 ppm lime-green target) and standard planted-aquarium CO2 practice — the same guidance behind our complete CO2 guide.

Frequently asked questions

How many bubbles per second does my tank need?

As a starting point, about 1 bubble per second for every 10 gallons — so a 20-gallon tank starts around 2 bubbles per second. But the bubble counter is only a dial, not a measurement: your drop checker color is what actually tells you the CO2 level. Adjust until the checker sits at lime green during the photoperiod.

Do aquarium plants really need CO2?

No — plenty of beautiful tanks run without injected CO2. Low-tech setups use moderate light, hardy plants like Java fern and Anubias, and patience instead of gas. CO2 mainly buys you faster growth and access to demanding carpeting and red plants. Our guide to growing plants without CO2 walks through the low-tech path.

Can too much CO2 kill my fish?

Yes. CO2 displaces oxygen and lowers pH; at high levels fish gasp at the surface, become lethargic, and can die — often with no warning color change in the tank. This is why you start low, raise the rate over one to two weeks, and treat livestock behavior as the final authority over any chart or calculator.

When should CO2 turn on and off each day?

Turn CO2 on 1–2 hours before the lights come on, so the water is saturated when photosynthesis starts. Turn it off about 1 hour before lights-out. A solenoid on a timer automates this — see our CO2 timing guide for the full schedule.

What color should my drop checker be?

Lime green during the photoperiod means roughly 30 ppm CO2 — the standard target. Blue means too little CO2; yellow means too much, reduce the rate. Always read it 2–3 hours after adjusting, and make sure it holds 4 dKH reference solution, not tank water.

These calculators provide starting guidelines based on standard planted-aquarium practices, not veterinary or professional advice. Every tank is different — observe your plants and livestock, adjust gradually, and when in doubt, start lower and go slow.
