UNS Controsoil vs ADA Amazonia: Which Is Better?

Pour the same stems into two identical tanks — one with ADA Amazonia, one with UNS Controsoil — and come back in a month. One tank is a jungle fighting thread algae; the other grew half as fast but is clean, stable, and already holding shrimp. That split personality is the whole story of this comparison.

Amazonia is the performance option: maximum growth, maximum discipline. Controsoil is the forgiving option: a slower start, calmer water, and livestock in the tank weeks earlier. Here is what each one actually does to your water, your plants, and your maintenance schedule.

The short answer: ADA Amazonia is the better aquasoil for maximum plant growth and high-tech aquascapes, but it leaches heavy ammonia for 4–6 weeks and demands large, frequent water changes during startup. UNS Controsoil is the better pick for beginners, shrimp keepers, and anyone who wants to stock livestock quickly — very little ammonia, pH settling around 6.8, and none of ADA's break-in discipline. Choose ADA for growth speed; choose Controsoil for stability and simplicity.

The ammonia difference: the real decision point

Fresh ADA Amazonia dumps a large amount of ammonium into the water for 4–6 weeks. Plants actually prefer ammonium over nitrate, so the leach is a feature — the soil force-feeds your plants while the tank cycles. But livestock added during that window is in real danger, and the excess fuels algae if you slack. The protocol is 50% water changes two or three times a week for the first few weeks — no skipping it.

Controsoil flips this. UNS engineered it for very low ammonia release — enough to kick-start bacteria, not enough to spike the tank — so you cycle normally without the water-change grind, and livestock goes in far earlier (see our UNS Controsoil planted tank guide).

This is the difference that should decide the purchase: dread maintenance and Amazonia's startup will punish you; keep the water-change schedule and Controsoil will feel underwhelming.

Plant growth: ADA wins, but by how much

Keepers who have run both rank Amazonia first for raw growth, Controsoil a close second. In a high-light CO2 tank Amazonia's denser nutrient payload reaches a finished scape noticeably faster — the reason it still anchors competitive aquascaping.

In a low-tech tank with easy plants, the gap shrinks to nearly nothing: both soils outgun anubias, java fern, or vallisneria. Paying for Amazonia's ceiling in a low-energy tank is a race engine for a grocery run.

Buffering, pH, and how long each lasts

Both are active buffering substrates: they strip KH from the water and hold pH in the acidic range plants prefer. Controsoil settles around pH 6.8 with lower total hardness — comfortable for most fish, shrimp, and plants. Amazonia buffers harder and lower, suiting caridina and soft-water species but working against livestock that wants harder, alkaline water.

Buffering is finite, and your tap water decides its lifespan. With soft, near-zero-KH water expect roughly two years of active buffering; with hard, alkaline tap water the soil burns through it in months — sometimes weeks. When buffering dies, nutrients usually linger longer, so do not tear the tank down: root tabs and liquid dosing are the standard recovery (see our guide to recharging exhausted aquasoil).

Granule durability differs too. Controsoil's volcanic-ash granules resist breakdown and compaction, keeping the bed porous for roots. Amazonia's granules famously soften and crumble after a couple of years — great for root penetration, worse for rescaping.

Granules, bags, and the no-rinse rule

Controsoil comes in three granule sizes — Extra Fine (~1 mm), Fine (~3 mm), Normal (~5 mm) — in black or brown, sold in 1L, 3L, and 10L bags (see UNS's official Controsoil page). Fine is the sweet spot for carpets; Extra Fine suits nano tanks. Amazonia is simpler: 3L and 9L bags in Normal and Powder types.

Never rinse either substrate. Rinsing breaks the granules and washes nutrients away. Both go into the tank dry; fill slowly, breaking the flow over a plate, bag, or your palm.

Which should you buy

Buy ADA Amazonia if you run CO2, push demanding plants, or chase the fastest growth possible — and will honestly do the water changes. The benchmark remains ADA Aqua Soil Amazonia Ver 2 (9L) ★4.7.

Buy UNS Controsoil if this is your first aquasoil, you keep shrimp, you want livestock in the tank soon, or you would rather spend the first month enjoying the tank than fighting it. For most readers, UNS Controsoil (3L, Extra Fine, Black) ★4.6 is the smarter buy — Extra Fine for carpets, and 3L fits tanks up to about 9 gallons.

No shame in the easy option: a thriving Controsoil tank beats an algae-choked Amazonia tank every time. Still deciding? Our Fluval Stratum vs ADA Amazonia comparison rounds out the picture.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use ADA Amazonia in a tank without CO2?

Yes — but the leach happens with or without CO2. In low-tech tanks Amazonia's growth edge shrinks sharply, so most low-tech keepers are happier with Controsoil.

When can I add shrimp to a Controsoil tank?

Controsoil cycles on a normal timeline: add shrimp once ammonia and nitrite read zero for several days. With Amazonia, wait out the full 4–6-week ammonia phase, especially for caridina shrimp.

Do I need to rinse either substrate before use?

No. Rinsing breaks granules and washes away nutrients. Place the soil dry in the tank and fill slowly over a plate or plastic bag.

Can I mix Controsoil and Amazonia in one tank?

You can, but there is little point: burying Amazonia under Controsoil hides the nutrient advantage while the top layer still sets the buffering. Pick one and run it straight.
